New Delhi: The Supreme Court has allowed fishermen to use narrow nets only on Mondays and Thursdays of the week.
Also, the Supreme Court has imposed strict restrictions on the use of gill nets for fishing.
The Supreme Court has today ruled on the case filed by the fishermen against the order issued by the Tamil Nadu government banning fishing nets.
Accordingly, permission has been given to use purse seine nets at sea, beyond 12 nautical miles, on two days a week, namely Mondays and Thursdays.
Also, only registered boats should be allowed to use purse seines. Fishermen should install proper tracking system equipment on their boats. The judges also mentioned in their order that this order is being issued so that both country boat fishermen and barge fishermen get equal benefits.
