A 29-year-old man has been charged with assault several months ago at the Regina Provincial Correctional Center, the RCMP said on Thursday.

A release issued on Thursday said the report of the attack by a guard and a prisoner was sent to the RCMP on February 25. Correctional Center is located east of Regina, in White Butte RCMP jurisdiction.

After an investigation and consultation with provincial Crown prosecutors, a 29-year-old man from Winnipeg was charged with one count of assault.

Police did not clarify whether the attacker was a guard or a prisoner.

In a statement, Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Corrections, Police and Public Security said that the person identified by the RCMP is “not currently employed” in the ministry.

However, it said “Due to the privacy law, the ministry is unable to discuss the employment history of the employees.”

The 29-year-old will be produced in Regina provincial court on July 27 at 9:30 a.m.
