Alliston, Ont. charity gets makeover, donation in honor of Behr’s 75th birthday – Barrie

An Alliston, Ontario, nonprofit is one of the recipients of a paint makeover in honor of Behr’s 75th birthday.

SHIFT, also known as Support and Hope for Individuals and Families Today in Alliston, is one of four recipients nationwide.

In addition to volunteers who helped give them a new coat of paint, Behr donated a grant of $7,437.57.

“We often feel like a very small fish in a very, very big pond, you know, being part of a very small community in a very rural area. The other three recipients are in some sort of bigger city centers, so there’s Halifax, just outside of Montreal, and then Vancouver, so for us it feels like a big deal to be selected,” said Jenifer Pergentile, SHIFT executive director.

Pergentile said some areas that are getting a makeover include their front and back porches and office space.

“It’s incredible how a fresh coat of paint can help create a constructive mindset and create an optimistic vibrancy in any environment,” said Christine Speagle, director of brand marketing at Behr Canada.

SHIFT is a non-profit organization that serves families, individuals and couples in South Simcoe experiencing or at risk of homelessness through programs, food and lodging options.

Pergentile said the money will support their day care center, which provides a warm place for vulnerable populations to access basic necessities, harm-reduction facilities, showers, internet and housing-related support.

“For us, the fact that Behr really cares about their community, and that’s what we’re doing here, is community building and caring for those who are especially the most vulnerable in our community,” Pergentile said.

The initiative is part of Behr Paint Company’s 75th anniversary celebrations.

As part of the project, two local artists will also create a mural on the wall of SHIFT outside to showcase the organization’s work to the community.
