In Kurdistan, around 500 women took to the streets and protested, breaking the windows of cars. Earlier, some women had expressed their outrage by cutting their hair and setting fire to their hijab.

Reuters reported that five women were killed as a result of Iranian security forces firing on protesting women. Tehran Police Chief Hossein Rahimi said that violating the dress code by women in Iran is a crime under the law.

Many countries including the European Union and France have strongly condemned the Mehsa incident and demanded that the Iranian authorities respect the rights of the country’s citizens.
