Beware of cyclonic storm ‘Mandus’! Heavy rain alert in many districts of Tamil Nadu, schools and colleges closed

The Tamil Nadu government declared a holiday for schools and colleges in eight districts of the state on Thursday. Schools and colleges will remain closed on December 9 due to the storm and heavy rains in Chennai, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Villupuram and Vellore.

Cyclonic storm Mandus is likely to cross the coast near Chennai at midnight today. Cyclone Mandus is moving towards Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. The Tamil Nadu government declared a holiday for schools and colleges in eight districts of the state on Thursday. Schools and colleges will remain closed on December 9 due to the storm and heavy rains in Chennai, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Villupuram and Vellore.

Strong wind likely to prevail over north Tamil Nadu coast and Sriharikota along and off Puducherry and Mahabalipuram during midnight of 9th December.

The winds are likely to maintain its intensity till the morning of 9th December. The storm is likely to weaken into a cyclonic storm and cross north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts with a wind speed of 85 kmph around Friday midnight.

According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rains may start in the delta districts from Thursday evening. The IMD said the intensity of the rains could peak on Friday night, as the cyclone moved closer to the coast.

Chennai will receive heavy rains on December 9 and 10 and about 20 cm of rain is expected. The Meteorological Department said Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Villupuram districts would receive heavy rains and a red alert has been declared in the three districts.
