She said: “Workers are facing severe challenges, including lack of basic facilities, long working hours, emergency leaves, medical facilities and dangerous working conditions.”

Afshan Tehseen Bajwa, former chairman of the National Child Rights Commission (NCRC), said: “The brick kiln industry is actually run by entrepreneurs, and the owners have not registered their kilns with the department of labor so that it should not provide social security and old-age benefits to workers.”

She said: “Their living conditions are alarming, with a lack of basic amenities putting them in a vicious cycle of poverty.”

She urged the proper implementation of existing laws towards the most neglected sector, whose workers are largely deprived of their legal rights and rights and forced to work in unhealthy and unsafe environments, and called for new laws for their protection and safety.
