ED attaches Manik Bhattacharya’s assets worth Rs 7.93 crore

Kolkata : Deposits in 61 bank accounts and FDs worth Rs 7.93 crore of Trinamool MLA Manik Bhattacharya and his family in the SSC case were attached by the ED on Thursday. This attachment has been done under the Money Laundering Act. Apart from FD, mutual funds are also included in this. Till now, attachment of 111 crores has been done in this case. The ED said in a statement that Manik Bhattacharya had 61 bank accounts in the names of his friends and relatives, which were opened by him and his family members with the objective of evading the law enforcement authorities.
Wife’s account also attached
It said that one such account used for money laundering activities was found in the name of Satrupa Bhattacharya, wife of Manik Bhattacharya and late Mrityunjay Chatterjee. Bhattacharya, a former chairman of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education, was arrested by the ED in October in connection with the alleged West Bengal teacher recruitment scam. Bhattacharya, the MLA from Palashipara seat in Nadia district, is currently in judicial custody. The ED is tracking the movement of money in the scam, while the CBI is probing the alleged irregularities in the recruitment. There are allegations that many people who performed poorly in the recruitment tests were appointed as teachers after taking lakhs of rupees while the eligible candidates were ignored. Significantly, in July, the ED had arrested former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee in connection with the School Service Commission recruitment scam. Earlier, the ED had recovered Rs 49.80 crore in cash and jewelery worth Rs 5.08 crore from Parth and his aide Arpita. His 40 immovable properties and the amount deposited in 35 bank accounts have been attached. Apart from this, flats and farm houses worth Rs 40.33 crore in Kolkata and surrounding areas and Rs 7.89 crore in 35 bank accounts have also been attached.
