FFD Flash Flood Forecast For Kirthar, Sulaiman Ranges

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 26th Aug, 2024) The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) on Monday predicted severe flash floods along the Kirthar Range (Jacobabad, Qambar Shandadkot, Dadu and Jamshoro Districts) and the Sulaiman Range ( DGKhan & Rajanpur). Districts) including nullahs in Balochistan (Zhob, Loralai, Sibbi, Nasirabad and Kalat Division) in addition to urban flooding in major cities of Sindh from August 27 to 31 (Tuesday to Saturday).

As of August 19, 2024, the Tarbela Reservoir will maintain the Maximum Conservation Level (MCL) of 1550 feet. However, ample storage space (26.23%) remains available in the Mangla reservoir to accommodate any potential high flow from the upstream Jhelum River. The combined live storage of the country’s major reservoirs (Tarbela, Chashma & Mangla) is 11,346 MAF, which is 84.96% of the total live storage capacity of 13,354 MAF.

According to FFD, Lahore, yesterday’s depression over Northwest Madhya Pradesh (India) has moved South-Southwest and is now located over Southeast Rajasthan (India). Trough of Westerly Wave extends over Northeast Afghanistan and near Pakistan, while Seasonal Low persists over North Balochistan.

Light moist currents from the Bay of Bengal penetrated the upper parts of Pakistan while moderate to strong moist currents from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea penetrated southern Sindh and adjoining areas up to 5000 feet at the time of the report. It is very likely to become intense during the next 4 days.

For the next 24 hours, FFD, Lahore has predicted scattered thunderstorms of moderate intensity over Islamabad, Punjab (Rawalpindi, Sargodka, Gujranwala, Multan, Bahawalpur & DG Khan Division) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including the upper basins of all major rivers of IRS.

For the same period, moderate to widespread thunderstorm rain with isolated heavy falls is expected over South and South-Eastern Sindh, besides isolated moderate to heavy rain over Punjab (Divisions Faisalabad, Sahiwal and Lahore) and Balochistan (Nasirabadi, Sibbi, Sibbi, Nasirabad Divisions Zhob and Kalat).

For the extended period from 27 August to 30 August 2024, widespread heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy falls may occur over South Punjab (DGKhan, Multan and Bahawalpur Divisions), Sindh and Balochistan (Zhob, Loralai, Sibbi). Nasirabad, Kalat and Makran Divisions).
