Firebug: 3 fires in Pitchi Richi Sanctuary

By ERWIN CHLANDA

The Pitchi Richi Sanctuary was gutted yesterday as the fire hit most properties from north to south.

Historian Alex Nelson, who is a resident of the historic tourist attraction, said there were no major infrastructural losses although Chapman’s House suffered minor fire damage.

The old entry station was saved and the cottage was not affected.

“Some of the Ricketts sculptures were burnt but I didn’t see any damage,” said Mr Nelson, who took the photos on this page.

He said it was clear that the first fire last night was intentionally lit but the following two were possible re-ignitions.

“The fires were still on the site after about five hours.”

Heritage Alice Springs “needs to take a hard look at itself because it seems the management of the site is inadequate.

“The big problem is the failure to control the buffel.”

Nelson said the third burning buildings in the sanctuary, as well as the nearby residences had “very narrow escapes all around”.
