Former Union Law Minister and senior lawyer Shanti Bhushan passes away

Former law minister and senior lawyer Shanti Bhushan passed away on Tuesday. He breathed his last at the age of 97 at his residence in Delhi. Shanti Bhushan represented Indira Gandhi v. Rajnarayan in the very famous Allahabad High Court case. Shanti Bhushan served as the Law Minister of India from 1977 to 1979 in Morarji Desai’s government.

 

Former Law Minister Shanti Bhushan filed a PIL in the Supreme Court in 2018 seeking changes in the ‘Master of Roster’ system. The petition requested that a rule and procedure be laid down for referring cases to the bench under the roster. Shanti Bhushan filed this petition through her son and lawyer Prashant Bhushan.

Shanti Bhushan was earlier an active member of the Congress Party and later became a member of the Janata Party. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 14 July 1977 to 2 April 1980. He joined Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980. But he resigned from BJP in 1986. Shanti Bhushan and his son Prashant Bhushan were also actively involved in the Anna Hazare movement.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted about the death of former law minister and senior lawyer Shanti Bhushan. The Prime Minister said, ‘Shri Shanti Bhushanji has made a very important contribution in the field of law. He has raised voice for the underprivileged throughout his life and will always be remembered for this. I am saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family. Om Shanti.’
