Govt says no plan to ban Chinese phones priced below Rs 12000 denies media reports

It has been reported that India plans to ban smartphones imported from China and sold in India priced below Rs 12,000. Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar has denied that this news is not true.

While smartphone usage in India has increased manifold in the past few years, the Indian mobile phone market has been dominated by Chinese companies such as Realme, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo with budget mobile phones. In this situation, China has been following the trend of conflict with India in various ways. Due to China’s sudden aggression on the Ladakh border, Indian-Chinese soldiers clashed and casualties occurred on both sides. Following this, India has also deployed thousands of soldiers along the border.

Also, as a response to China, in order to control Chinese companies, apps like Tik Tok and WeChat have been banned and the central government has also refused permission to provide 5G technology devices to companies like Huawei and ZTE. Also, recently the central government has been monitoring the trade transactions of Chinese smartphones. It was revealed that those companies were involved in financial fraud and were evading several thousand crores of tax.

While imposing fines on those companies, it was reported that the central government is planning to ban smartphones under Rs 12,000 that are imported from China and sold in India as a way to rein in Chinese smartphone companies and encourage Indian companies.

Perhaps this ban will have a huge impact on the smartphone market. Union Minister of State Rajiv Chandrasekhar has clarified that the Central Government has no intention of removing foreign brands from the Indian market.

Likewise, necessary steps will be taken to promote Indian brands by getting their rightful place in the market. “If there is any irregularity in pricing in the market, the government will intervene and complain,” he said.
