Astronomer Javed Iqbal said that the Super Blue Moon is a combination of two separate astronomical phenomena.

A supermoon is when the moon is about 262,000 kilometers from Earth in its orbit, making the moon appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than an average full moon.

The next 3 supermoons will appear in the sky on September 18th, October 17th and November 15th, today’s super blue moon is the third blue moon of the season.

According to NASA, the next Super Blue Moon will not occur until January 2037, which is why today’s Super Blue Moon could be of particular interest to astronomers.
