India warns citizens in Canada for safety

The government of India has warned Indian citizens and students living in Canada of an increase in “hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-Indian activities” in the country, and is calling on their citizens to exercise caution.

In a statement released Friday, India’s foreign ministry said officials “have taken up these incidents” with Canadian authorities and have called for investigations into “reported crimes”. The statement also claims that hate crimes against Indian nationals have increased in Canada.

“The perpetrators of these crimes have not yet been brought to justice in Canada,” the statement said.

The message does not mention any specific crimes or provide any further information about the Indian government’s claims.

The ministry also advises Indian citizens and students in Canada to register with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or the Consulate General of India in Toronto or Vancouver to better contact officials in case of emergency.

CTVNews.ca has reached out to the federal government and Indian officials for comment.
