A UN team was also mobilized to investigate the deaths during the protests before the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina Wajid.

According to foreign media reports, a United Nations fact-finding team will visit Bangladesh next week to investigate hundreds of deaths during recent student protests.

The UN will fund and lead an independent commission of inquiry, said Gwen Lewis, the UN coordinator for Bangladesh, after meeting with Bangladesh’s interim government’s foreign policy adviser, Tawheed Hussai, in Dhaka .

He also said that the time frame will be decided soon and the action plan will also be finalised.

A day ago, the head of the UN for Human Rights, Volker Turk, spoke with the chief counsel of Bangladesh, Muhammad Younis, on the phone and said that an investigation led by the UN would be launched soon to investigate the killing of demonstrators.

“A team will visit the country soon to start an investigation,” Turk said, according to Muhammad Younis’ press office.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Yunus asked for the cooperation of the United Nations in the reconstruction of the country and the protection of human rights.

It should be noted that after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina Wajid and fled the country, an interim government was established in Bangladesh and the Nobel Peace Prize winning economist Muhammad Younis was made the head with the powers of the Prime minister.

It should be noted that until Sheikh Hasina fled the country, at least 580 people were killed in protests by students and citizens.
