Jail photo of Lt Gen (Retd) Amjad Shoaib is going viral

A photograph of Lt Gen (Retd) Amjad Shoaib, a defense analyst who is now in police custody, has gone viral on social media.

On 27 February, the Islamabad police arrested the retired military officer at his apartment in the federal capital during a pre-dawn operation. He was detained for inciting and spreading hatred among the public towards national institutions.

In the viral picture, the ex-serviceman can be seen behind bars with folded hands and gazing at the camera.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan said he was “ashamed as a Pakistani to see the depths” due to the “imported administration of a cavalcade of crooks and their masters”. after seeing the picture.

“They have jailed a respectable, patriotic Pakistani on charges of treason in their desperate attempt to grab power and silence any dissenting voice,” the PTI leader alleged.

Amjad Shoaib, a retired lieutenant general, is currently being held by the police on three-day physical remand.

The former army commander was brought to the court of judicial magistrate Abbas Shah on the same day he was detained, and the remand was authorized by a local court in Islamabad.

The prosecution sought seven days’ remand and during the hearing informed the court that a case had been initiated against the former three-star general.

According to prosecutor Adnan, the former general attempted to sow a divide between the government, the opposition and public servants with his TV comments.

The police request was rejected by the court, and he was placed on three days physical remand.
