Indian Foreign Minister S. Jayasinghe on Thursday called on Sri Lankan Foreign Minister GL Peiris in Kigali, Rwanda.
S. Jayasinghe posted on Twitter, ‘I met with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister GL Peiris as part of the Commonwealth Summit. The two discussed the issues facing the Commonwealth and India’s assistance to Sri Lanka.
India has so far disbursed Rs 31,322 crore in loans to Sri Lanka, which is facing an economic crisis.
Consultation on the Commonwealth Conference
Foreign Minister S. Jaishank, who is in Rwanda, one of the East African countries, held consultations with Foreign Minister Vincent Bruda on the Commonwealth Summit.
The 26th Commonwealth Summit will be held in Kigali, Rwanda from June 24-25. External Affairs Minister S. Jayasinghe is participating in the conference on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. To this end, she arrived in Kigali on Wednesday on a 4-day trip.
Following that, she met with Rwandan Foreign Minister Vincent Bruda on Thursday. Then, Prime Minister Modi discussed the progress made in relations between the two countries since his visit to Rwanda in 2018. They also discussed issues to be discussed at the Commonwealth Conference.
Following this, S. Jayasinghe had separate meetings with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister GL Peiris, Bangladeshi Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie and Tanzanian Foreign Minister Liberta Mulamula.
Earlier, S. Jayasinghe met the Indian community in Kigali on Wednesday evening and held discussions with them. He briefed them on the progress made in India. He also lauded the Indian community for playing a major role in strengthening India-Rwanda friendship.
S. Jaishan also met with Kenyan Foreign Minister Rachel Omamo. They discussed the blockade of essential commodities such as food, fuel and fertilizer by the Ukraine-Russia war.
