In the case of the rape and murder of a doctor in training in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal, India, the case took another new turn after the crime scene was revealed.
On August 9, 2024, a 31-year-old post-graduate doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Calcutta. She was found dead with facial injuries in the seminar room of the hospital.
In the Kolkata hit-and-run case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the Supreme Court that when it took over the investigation, the crime scene was changed.
According to Indian media, this statement came when a photo of the body of a 31-year-old doctor found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College went viral on social media.
Several people can be seen at the crime scene in the photo, leading to allegations that people who are not relatives may have entered and manipulated key evidence.
In response to these allegations, the Kolkata Police issued a clarification saying that all the people seen in the viral photo are authorized officers involved in the investigation process.
The photo was taken after the investigation and the videographer of the investigation department, the police commissioner, forensic experts and other concerned officials were among those present, the police said.
The Kolkata Police added that no unauthorized person was allowed to enter the crime scene and all those present were part of the investigation process, thus ruling out any tampering of evidence.
