So, even on occasions like Shravan and Shivratri there is special glory of seeing the divine form of Maheshwar here. Of course, it is natural to ask, why are live crabs offered to Mahadev?
Why do crabs climb?
An interesting legend is attached to why this crab is offered to Ramnath Ghela Mahadev. It is said that when Sri Rama, who had come out of exile, reached this land, he wanted to perform tarpana vidhi for his father Dasharatha on the shore. At that time Shri Ram shot an arrow at the ground and with that Shiv Linga appeared from the earth. Seeing the divine form of Maheshwar, Sriram was overwhelmed. And that is why Mahadev became famous here as Ramnath Ghela Mahadev.
After the appearance of Maheshwar, Sriram needed a Brahmin for the tarpana ceremony of his father. It is said that Daryadev himself took the form of a Brahmin and came to perform the tarpana ceremony. It being the day of high tide, along with Daryadev, numerous sea creatures and especially crabs were drawn to the Shivlinga. Finally, Daryadeva prayed to Sri Rama to save those souls. And Shriram, offering blessings, said, “O Samudradev! Mahadev appeared here on Posh Vada Ekadashi. So, on that day the person who offers this crab to Mahadev Dada, all his troubles will end. Both humans and crabs will be saved.”
That is, it is because of that blessing provided by Sri Ramachandraji that Ramnath Ghela Mahadev has the honor of offering crabs. The most interesting thing is that such abhishek is not done on any other Shivling in the world.
