The Election Commission is going to announce the dates for the assembly elections in Maharashtra. The previous assembly elections in the state were held in October 2019. In this election, there was 61.4% voting in all 288 seats of the state. Based on the pre-poll alliance, the BJP-Shiv Sena NDA alliance had achieved a lot. But due to differences between Shiv Sena and BJP for the post of Prime Minister, the government could not be formed and this alliance of NDA was broken.

As no party had an absolute majority and the government could not be formed in a given time, the rule of the president was imposed on the state. Meanwhile, on November 23, 2019, early morning, NCP leader Ajit Pawar joined hands with the BJP and in a program at Raj Bhavan, BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the Chief Minister and Ajit Pawar as and Vice Minister. But both leaders resigned on November 26, 2019 before showing their majority in the assembly.

After Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray, NCP led by Sharad Pawar and Congress formed an alliance called Maha Vikas Aghadi and made the claim to form the government. The alliance made Uddhav Thackeray the Prime Minister. This government lasted about three years, but Uddhav Thackeray had to resign as Prime Minister due to a split in the Shiv Sena. Shiv Sena MLA Eknath Shinde rebelled with party members.

Eventually Eknath Shinde joined forces with the rebel members of the BJP and was sworn in as the Prime Minister. Devendra Fadnavis of BJP became Deputy Chief Minister in this government. After some time, Sharad Pawar led NCP also split and his nephew Ajit Pawar rebelled and joined hands with the newly formed Eknath Shinde government. He was given the post of Deputy Prime Minister.

In the elections held in the year 2019, along with the BJP and Shiv Sena, other parties contested the elections under the banner of NDA. In this election, the BJP contested a total of 164 seats, of which it won 105 seats. While Shiv Sena contested on 126 seats and won 56 seats. Also, under the UPA, the NCP contested in a total of 121 seats and won 54 seats, while the Congress contested in 147 seats and won 44 seats.

Apart from them, BSP won 3 seats, AIMIM and Samajwadi Party 2 seats each. The Congress-led UPA was supported by Raju Shetty’s Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghathana, Kisan-Labour Party, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Vikas Aghadi and Swabhiman Sanghathana.
