Main opposition parties in Maldives express grave concern over government’s anti-India stance – News18 Bangla

The two main opposition parties in the Maldives have expressed concern over the anti-India stance of the Muijju government. They worry about over-reliance on China. Addressing New Delhi as a long-time friend, they commented, ‘Maldives are suffering’. The Maldives Democratic Party and The Democrats claim that turning away from development partners, especially the antagonism of the country’s longest-standing ally, is “severely damaging” to the long-term development of the Maldives.

Maldivian opposition parties have openly expressed their anger against the government’s current foreign policy. In their words, the government should think about the welfare of the people of the country first. And all the countries leading the development of the Maldives should be brought together’. China wants to dominate the Indian Ocean. In the joint press conference, it was also raised that ‘the status and security of the Indian Ocean is crucial to the status and security of the Maldives’.

The joint press conference was attended by MDP Chairperson and former Minister Faiz Ismail, Parliament Deputy Speaker MP Ahmed Salim, Democrat Party President MP Hasan Latif and Parliamentary Group Leader MP Ali Azim. Both parties promised to work together on many issues. They expressed concern about the lack of transparency in foreign policy and government work. In fact, the total number of MPs in both parties is 55 in the 87-member parliament.
