Mangaluru News: Even if the record is written, the fishermen do not benefit!

Mangaluru: Fishing in Mangaluru has taken place on a larger scale than ever before in the undivided Dakshina Kannada (Udupi and Dakshina Kannada) district. But, strangely, even though there is so much fishing, only the profit margin is low. In the season of 2022-23, due to less effect of rain and storm, fishing is possible till the end of this season (31st May).

However, sharp fall in prices and low export volume have not brought much profit to the fishermen. But only local customers could get fish at low prices.

Boats at anchor

In the background of not getting much profit, the boats anchored in the respective ports before the scheduled time. This summer’s drought is also said to be the reason for the fall in fishing profits.

How was the fishing this season?

This year the fishing has been very high. In this season, 3,33,537 metric tons of fishing has been done in Dakshina Kannada district and 2,12,081 metric tons in Udupi district. Compared to previous years, the fishing has been good this time.

A total of 5,45,618 metric tonnes of fishing has taken place in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district during the season of 2022-23. Compared to the last time, the undivided Dakshina Kannada district has seen an increase in fishing by almost three times.

Handed export, price drop!

It is said that this time the fish mills have not functioned properly as expected. 13 fish mills in one part of Ullal were closed throughout the year. In addition, the water problem in summer also hit the fish export hard. Although fishing has increased, the profit margins alone have fallen by 30-40 percent, fishermen said. Although there is local marketing, all of them are sold at low prices.
