New Telecom Bill coming soon

A new Telecom Bill will come before the Parliament in another 6 to 10 months. Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav released the draft bill for public opinion on the bill. He clarified that the central government is not in a hurry to approve the new telecom bill. He said that the final draft will be prepared only after public consultation and wide consultation. He said that the final draft will be sent to the parliamentary committee first and then it will be introduced in the parliament. The new bill replaces the Indian Telegraph Act 1885, the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act 1933 and the Telegraph Wires (Unlawful Seizure) Act 1950.

Public opinion on the new telecom bill will be collected before October 20. It has been included in the draft bill that WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Duo, Over the Top (OTT) companies providing audio calling, video calling and messaging services over the internet will now have to take a domestic telecom license. A provision to waive the fees and delinquency fees of telecom and internet service providers has also been proposed in the bill. The new bill also has a proposal to refund fees if telecom companies surrender their licences.
