NGT says huge gap continues in compliance of bio-medical waste management rules

Taking note of the data submitted by 23 states and union territories, a bench headed by Chairman Justice AK Goel said, “There is still a huge gap in compliance with statutory bio-medical waste management rules and unless duly addressed Until that is done, such gaps will continue to compromise public health and the environment.” “There is a need to plan and execute remedial action,” said a bench comprising Judicial Member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Expert Member A Senthil Vel. “We take on record the actual position of the gap and approve the proposed monitoring framework (by the Central Pollution Control Board), which may be duly implemented,” it said.

The green panel said that as per the rules, only a 1,000-bed member health facility can ensure disposal and treatment of bio-medical waste through a common bio-medical waste treatment and disposal facility located within 75 kms.
