Nine killed in 6.8-magnitude earthquake in KP, building evacuated in Islamabad
Nine people, including two women, were killed, more than 160 were injured and several buildings collapsed when a 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked areas of Pakistan on Tuesday, officials said.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority KP reports that ten people were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including five adults, two women and an equal number of children.
According to KP PDMA reports, at least 44 people were injured as a result of various accidents that occurred in the aftermath of the earthquake. But, reports say that there are more than 160 injuries.
According to reports, at least 19 houses were partially damaged in the province.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Relief, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Department Secretary Abdul Basit and PDMA Director General Sharif Hussain went to the Emergency Operation Center. The Relief Secretary said that Rescue 1122 provided immediate medical attention to the injured and shifted them to local hospitals.
District Administration, Rescue and Civil Defense were also instructed by the Secretary to maintain alertness for relief and rescue efforts. The secretary said that all district administrations and concerned institutions are in regular touch with the PDMA.
He informed that the situation is being constantly monitored and advised the public to call the helpline 1700 or 1122 to report any suspicious activity.
Islamabad buildings were evacuated
Police in Islamabad indicated that there were no deaths from the capital’s earthquake.
Khudad Heights has been evacuated after a fracture in the wall was detected, according to police, who also noted that law enforcement officials from the local government and law enforcement agency are at the scene.
“A building inspection has been ordered by the district administration.”
Following the tremors, residents of other multi-storey residential buildings in the federal capital were also evacuated.
