OAKLAND — A woman survived an estimated 30-foot fall Monday morning when she jumped from a third-story apartment near Lake Merritt to escape a violent attack by her boyfriend.
The woman suffered broken bones and multiple cuts but was in a stable condition in hospital.
The 35-year-old boyfriend was later arrested and some guns were recovered from a bag he was carrying, authorities said.
The attack happened around 10:55 a.m. Monday at an apartment building in the 500 block of MacArthur Boulevard near Beacon Street where the two lived, police said.
Officials said the man and woman were in a relationship and had a child together. The child was not in the apartment at the time.
Police said the two got into an argument but did not say what it was about.
The man threatened to kill the woman and began choking and beating her, police said.
Fearing for her life, the woman jumped from the third floor window and landed on the ground, police said.
Police were called to the scene and a struggle ensued with the suspect. He was eventually found hours later hiding in a stairwell area, authorities said. Two guns were in a bag near him, police said.
The man was booked into the Santa Rita Jail on multiple charges, including attempted murder, causing bodily injury to the parents of his child, false imprisonment with violence, making criminal threats and weapons offenses. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
