An oil spill on the northwestern coast of Venezuela has damaged the marine environment.
Investigator Eduardo Cline says the spill caused 225 square kilometers of damage, while fishing in the area was also affected.
AFP reporters say the oil washed up on sandy beaches near the El Palito refinery in Puerto Cabello.
According to a post on X that contains satellite images, the oil shale has damaged up to 225 square kilometers, says environmental researcher Eduardo Klein.
State oil company PDVSA did not immediately comment on the situation, with fishermen saying there is still oil off the coast of Puerto Cabello.
Last year, when there was an oil explosion at the El Paloto refinery, PDVSA said that it was not heavy crude oil, but hydrocarbons, wastewater or waste discharges that were sent to the coastal marine environment
Venezuela, which has one of the world’s largest oil reserves, has seen production drop from 3 million barrels a day more than a decade ago to 400,000 barrels a day in 2020 due to corruption, mismanagement and and US sanctions
Venezuela’s production has now reached almost one million barrels per day, but many experts say that Venezuela’s equipment is in poor condition.
