Prasenjit Dasgupta, New Delhi: Special ‘coaching’ is arranged in Parliament to train ‘newbie’ MPs. Lok Sabha ( (LokSabha) On behalf of the Secretariat. Significantly, the majority of MPs from the ruling BJP remained absent from the special orientation program for MPs. The disgruntled opposition camp focused on the ‘absence’ of the ruling party representatives in this two-day coaching of MPs. Even the Speaker of Lok Sabha Om Birla is very unhappy with this behavior of new MPs.

This year, 75 people’s representatives have entered the Parliament after winning various by-elections held across the country. Among them, 15 are the second round of return. 60 people stepped into parliament for the first time. Needless to say, the ‘majority’ of them, about 30 MPs, belong to the BJP, and the rest belong to other parties. A two-day coaching class was organized to educate 75 MPs about the customs, procedures, functions of the House etc. Leaders like Derek O’Brien of the Trinamool Congress, veteran Congress MPs Jairam Ramesh, Abhishek Singhvi, Vandana Chavan of the NCP and Ravi Shankar Prasad of the BJP were retained as teachers. But it has been alleged that most of the BJP MPs are absent from the 2-day special class. Among the 30 MPs, only three were present – Laxmikant Vajpayee, Baburam Nishad and Dr. Kalpana Saini. Anger spread about why the rest did not come to class.

According to sources, 17 out of 20 MPs from the opposition camp attended the class. It is also known that the newly-nominated Rajya Sabha MP and athlete PT Usha won the respect of everyone in this two-day classroom. The performance of other opposition MPs, especially the new Left MPs, drew praise. The question has arisen, why did not the majority of representatives of Gerua camp stay in this important orientation program? According to reliable sources, 27 BJP MPs could not attend the MP’s classroom to participate in the party’s task-setting program organized by Home Minister Amit Shah. Expressing strong anger in this context, an influential opposition leader said, ‘This shows how much respect the BJP has for the Parliament. Both Modi and Shah continue to flout parliamentary norms. That contempt, neglect and indifference is manifested in the behavior of the newcomers of the party.’ According to reliable sources, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla himself has expressed his displeasure over this incident. Meanwhile, three women MPs of the Trinamool Congress – Dola Sen, Mausam Noor and Kakali Ghosh Dastidar – are going to bring a pending motion in both houses of Parliament demanding an urgent discussion on Monday against a Gujarat BJP MLA accused in the rape case, according to party sources.
