There are 790 schools under the School Education Department in Chennai, Chennai Municipal Corporation. In this, as most of the schools do not have basic infrastructure facilities, many councilors and people have requested that they should be merged with the Corporation.
Subsequently, 139 schools, including one in Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram districts and Chennai district, were handed over under the administration of the Municipal Education Department.
Now that admissions have started in the municipal schools, Mayor Priya inspected the structures of the newly connected schools yesterday.
Accordingly, the Mayor visited schools in Kottivakkam, Perungudi, Narayanapuram, Jalladianpet, Mailai Balaji Nagar.
At that time, the mayor asked the head teachers and officials about the basic facilities required in the schools.
Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan, Deputy Commissioners Sharanya Ari, Amit and others participated in the inspection.
We are taking steps to improve schools affiliated to Chennai Corporation. In particular, we are giving priority to perimeter wall, kitchen, classroom building etc. In the first phase, at a cost of Rs 35 crore, steps have been taken to demolish the badly damaged school classrooms and construct new classrooms.
