A Russian court has fined social networking application WhatsApp for data storage violations.

Russian authorities ordered WhatsApp and other social networking applications and websites to store Russian citizens’ data locally, and a Russian court fined WhatsApp 18 million rubles ( 6 and a half crore rupees) fined.

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, disputes have intensified in Russia against international information technology companies over issues such as content, censorship, data and spatial representation.

Besides WhatsApp, Snapchat, Tinder and Hotel.com have also been fined by a Russian court for refusing to store Russian citizens’ data locally.
