Former Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) General Manager Public Affairs Salahuddin Siddiqui passed away today in London at the age of 93. He was the last survivor of the six passengers who survived the Cairo plane crash.
Salahuddin Siddiqui retired from PIA in 1980 as General Manager Public Affairs. On May 20, 1965, PIA’s inaugural flight from Karachi to Cairo, PK 705, crashed 20 kilometers from Cairo airport shortly before landing.
The inaugural flight was from Karachi to Zahran (Saudi Arabia), Cairo and from there to London. The flight was carrying 128 passengers including passengers and crew. 122 passengers and crew members were killed in the accident. Among them was Momi Gul Durrani, a famous PIA air hostess.
21 journalists also died in this tragic accident. Among them were the Managing Director of Associated Press of Pakistan, Mr. AK Qureshi and the Chairman of National Press Trust, Major General Hayauddin.
6 lucky passengers survived the accident. Among them was Salahuddin Siddiqui, the former managing director of PIA who died today and was the last surviving passenger.
Salahuddin Siddiqui lived in London for a long time. According to family sources, Salahuddin Siddiqui is survived by a son and a daughter.
The PIA spokesperson expressed condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the airline’s management on the death of Salahuddin Siddiqui and said that today we have lost a long-time partner. Salahuddin Siddiqui’s services to the national airline will be remembered
