Cinnamon: The 18th Hull Day was celebrated in the Kalchini block with various ceremonies. On this occasion, a program was organized at Bishwanath Para near Hamiltonganj on the initiative of Majhi Pargana Welfare Society, an indigenous Santal speaking organization. There, the program began with a tribute to tribal freedom fighters Sidhu and Kanho. Then the Bernadette procession started from there. The procession went around different areas of Hamiltonganj and reached the BDO office of Kalchini. There, a memorandum was given to Kalchini’s BDO on various demands on behalf of the organization. Govinda Marandi, secretary of the organization, said Hull Day is a glorious day for the tribals. He alleged that in 2012, the Rajya Sabha passed a bill recognizing Santal as a second language in the state. Although there is a Santal language education center in South Bengal, no Santal language educational institution has been set up in North Bengal, especially in Alipurduar district. He further alleged that in February this year, the Chief Minister had announced to set up 500 Santal language education centers in North Bengal, but it has not been implemented yet. The development of any nation begins with education in the mother tongue. But he complained that we are being deprived of that right to education. The BDO was also given a memorandum on four demands, including the formation of a separate development board for Santali speakers. The BDO has assured us that they will convey their demands to the higher authorities. On this day, BDO Prashant Barman took part in the path journey of some path organization. Ravi Murmu, president of the organization, said a cultural program has been organized in Bishwanath Para on the occasion. Apart from the Kalchini block of the organization, representatives of various blocks including Kumargram, Nagarakata and Falakata also participated in the function.
On the other hand, on the initiative of Kalchini Hull Day Organizing Committee, a separate program was organized at Robi-Vanu-Birsa Bhavan in Kalchini. Union Minister and Alipurduar MP John Barla, MLA of Kalchini Bishal Lama and others paid homage to the portraits of freedom fighters Sidhu and Kanho. The Minister said that in the history of independence, the names of the indigenous freedom fighters will be written in gold letters. There is unity among the tribals. So everyone is celebrating the day together. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken the initiative to appoint a woman from an indigenous community as the country’s president. Indigenous people are proud of this. His demand is that everyone should support this decision irrespective of party affiliation. Over fifteen thousand people of the indigenous Santal community have sacrificed themselves for the country. For which we are alive today in the right way. That is why Hull Day is being celebrated with dignity all over the country, he said.
