Following The Wire’s revelations about the Manipur tapes, ten curious MLAs from the state issued a joint statement saying that Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s complicity in the government-sponsored genocide, which we witnessed from the first day, I believe now there is no room for doubt.
New Delhi: Reacting to the Wire’s revelations of the Manipur tapes, all ten MLAs from the state’s Kuki community, nine of whom belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have demanded that the caste ban continue from 2023. The Commission of Inquiry set up by the Union Home Ministry to look into the controversy must “speed up its investigation” and Chief Minister N Bariyan Singh must be immediately removed from office to investigate he can be prevented from interfering with the results
In a press note issued on the evening of August 21, ten MLAs – Haukhulet Kipgin, Nemcha Kipgin, Pauline Lal Haukup, Leetsaming Haukup, Litpao Hukup, Ngorsinglar Sanate, LM Khaute and Vingzagin Walte belonged to the BJP “The complicity of the CM The government-sponsored genocide, which we believed from day one, is now in it,” said Chen Lanthang and Qin Haukip Housheng of the Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA). There is no room for doubt.
We know that KPA, an ally of the Berean Singh government, withdrew its support in August 2023 due to ethnic conflict.
Following ethnic violence between Kuki and Meitei, these MLAs were absent from several sessions of the state assembly, to reinforce their demand for ‘separate administration’ for the Kuki community from the Centre.
The press release said: “The Prime Minister can be clearly heard assuring his audience, his tone and voice suggest that he is a member of the militia. Central agencies should arrest them before arresting others.”

The Wire’s revelations are based on audio tapes presented to the commission headed by former Guwahati High Court Chief Justice (retd) Ajay Lamba. The witnesses identified themselves before the commission and claimed that they had recorded a meeting with the chief minister at his official residence in Imphal last year. He claimed that the voice heard in the tape is that of Chief Minister N Bariyan Singh.
The Commission granted confidentiality to the witnesses to protect them. That’s why The Wire didn’t reveal all the details of the sit-in in its report.
The MLA’s August 21 press release said, “The (recording) tape also shows how the Union Home Minister reprimanded him for allowing the use of bombs on civilians, and how after the departure of Home Minister Amit Shah, Bareen Singh ordered top police officials to secretly use the bombs, ignoring the Home Minister’s instructions.
We know that the Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the state at the end of May 2023, about three weeks after the beginning of the ethnic conflict. In August 2023, Shah rejected opposition demands for the resignation of the Prime Minister for failing to maintain law and order in the state and declared that he was “collaborating” with the Centre.
During the violence, thousands of weapons and ammunition were also looted from the state’s arsenal, most of which have not yet been recovered. Referring to this, the press note said: “The Prime Minister could also be heard telling his supporters how he ensured that they were not arrested in case of looting of 4000-5000 arms and ammunition by the state forces. also be heard to say that the Kukis could abuse them, and rightly because they killed about 300 of them, but the Meitei did not abuse them.
Although the Prime Minister refused to answer questions sent by The Wire before publishing the report, he later called the audio tape as “doctored” and the report as a means to establish peace between Kuki and Meitei . national activity with the aim of diverting the ongoing process.
However, the MLA reacted to the claims in a press release saying that “while confirming the authenticity of the tape, Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s brother Rajendra Nong is not allowed to sell such sensitive tapes to the others on Facebook.’
The Kuki MLA once again appealed to the central government to fulfill his demand for a separate administration in the form of a union territory with an assembly as soon as possible, as this is the way for lasting peace in the region.
