The Saskatchewan RCMP is investigating the death of an Alberta man shortly after being released from custody on Thursday.

The RCMP stopped traffic on Highway 1 near Morse, Sask. Thursday afternoon where Edmonton, Alta. The man was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, according to a press release.

The RCMP reported that a small amount of unknown pills were found in the vehicle.

The man was released from custody without charge at around 3:45 p.m. Two hours later, the RCMP claimed to have learned that he was receiving medical attention from an ambulance. According to police, he was taken to the hospital, where he died a few hours later.

The Saskatchewan RCMP is investigating the death due to the man’s recent contact with police and an unknown substance found in his car.

The Saskatchewan Coroner Service is also investigating and will perform an autopsy.

The RCMP said they are not releasing the man’s name at this time.

The RCMP has asked the Department of Justice and the Attorney General of Saskatchewan to appoint an independent monitor.
