Jalandhar is a famous populated district of the Indian subcontinent. It is not only rich in population, but also famous for its agricultural fertility, famous intellectuals, artists and countless historical figures from every field of life. This region of land is also called two waters because it is located between two rivers. Nikodar is a tehsil of Jalandhar district between the Sutlej and Beas rivers. A small village in this tehsil was known as ‘Bhadm’. Chaudhary Imam Din of this village was a farmer and a middle-class landowner, but he was respected in the area because of his nobility and gentry. Chaudhary Imam Din had two sons, Haji Jan Muhammad and Haji Rehmatullah. He also had a daughter. The eldest son moved to Great Britain in 1929 and settled in Glasgow where he worked for fifteen years and continued to support his family as usual, with whom Chaudhary Imam Din also increased his agricultural land until He became the prosperous owner of the village.
Haji Rehmatullah, the second son of Mian Imam Din, tended and cultivated the lands with his father. Haji Rahmatullah was my dear father. He is married to Rehmat Bibi, the only daughter of Mian Nabi Baksh, a close relative. From his womb I had my elder brothers Haji Fateh Muhammad, Haji Sardar Muhammad Shahid, a sister Maryam and Rakim Bashir Ahmad Mujahid. Apart from him, two brothers died in their youth. Birth records have not been kept, but according to primary school records, my date of birth is November 1, 1942. My mother was the only child of her parents. So under the joint family system which was very strong in our Punjab villages, we all lived together in Nana’s house. My mother suffered from diabetes and went to meet her true maker in 1946 when we were very young. Thus, I lost my mother’s shadow in 1946 at the age of about four years.
This was the time of the rise of the Pakistan Movement. In Nikodar tehsil and our village Muslims were the majority. The Hindu Muslim conflict was ongoing which was increasing day by day. The local Sikhs and Hindus in our area did not have the courage to fight or oppose us. But Hindus and Sikhs came together to fight the Muslims from other nearby areas. At the same time, our uncle Haji John Muhammad came back from England and when the Muslims came to know that this area of Jalandhar became part of India and the Muslims had to leave there. The graves of my mother Ms and other elders of the family were in our fields near the cemetery near the village. I remember whenever I was unhappy with my family, I would sit on my mother’s grave in anger and my family would look for me and take me home.
