Thousands of fish have died due to alleged water poisoning in Bangladesh’s Dhanmandi Lake.

Dhaka South City Corporation removed about 1.5 tons of dead fish from Dhanmundi Lake on Friday, Bangladeshi media reported, after locals saw thousands of dead fish in the lake at noon.

Officials said no specific cause of the fish kill was immediately known, but it is feared that the number of dead fish may rise further.

An official of the Dhaka South City Corporation said water samples and dead fish were being collected to determine the cause of death.

He said that the fish may be poisoned by someone for personal profit, possibly by a former tenant of the lake to damage the business of the current tenant.
