Trudeau attends Shinzo Abe state funeral in Tokyo

OTTAWA-

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend a state funeral for the slain former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe next week in Tokyo.

Abe, 67, who had resigned as prime minister in 2020, was killed in July during a political campaign event in Nara, Japan.

Trudeau’s office said in a statement that Japan’s longest-serving prime minister was a “strong ally and friend” of Canada.

Trudeau is expected to leave Ottawa on Saturday, attend the funeral on Tuesday, and fly back on Wednesday.

During the trip, he is also expected to meet the current Prime Minister of Japan, Kishida Fumio.

The PMO says the two will discuss shared priorities as Japan prepares to assume the G7 presidency next year, and regional security issues, including North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
