BhubaneswarPOCSO Fast Track Court in Bhubaneswar sentenced two convicts to 10 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for raping and blackmailing a minor girl in Tamando area in 2018. The court also asked the state government to pay Rs 7 lakh as compensation to the victim.
POCSO Fast Track Court Judge Murlidhar Pradhan pronounced the verdict on Wednesday after examining 16 witnesses and 32 appeals on behalf of the state government. Special Public Prosecutor Rajeev Sasmal presented the case on behalf of the government.
The two convicts are Pabitra Panda and Binod Sahu, both residents of Tamando PS border on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. However, another accused in the case, Santosh Sahu, is still absconding.
As per the details of the case, the victim, who was then 15 years old, was living at her uncle’s house in Kalinga Vihar area for her studies. One of the convicts, Binod Sahu, who used to be a neighbour, managed to take a picture of the victim when the latter was talking to a male friend and threatened to show her to his family members.
On the pretext of deleting the photo, Binod lured the minor girl to his house, where he outraged her modesty and made a video of her shameful act. Later Binod forcibly had physical relations with her by showing the video. Two of her friends Pabitra and Santosh also outraged her modesty by blackmailing the minor girl through the video.
However, the minor gathered courage and narrated his ordeal to his family members and a complaint was lodged at Tamando police station. After investigation, police arrested two accused Binod and Pabitra while another accused Santosh managed to dodge the police and is still absconding.
