UNFPA scales up emergency response to reach women, girls in Turkey, Syria
Thousands of buildings have collapsed or been severely damaged, including UNFPA-supported maternity facilities, youth centres, and safe places for women and girls. According to a statement, UNFPA’s immediate priority is to re-establish services critical to the health, well-being and safety of women and girls.
UNFPA has offices and operations in the affected areas and is immediately assessing impacts and preparing to support the emergency response in coordination with authorities and partners, Xinhua news agency reported.
Despite logistical challenges, UNFPA has already begun providing reproductive health services to earthquake survivors through existing distribution points in Turkey and is also distributing Dignity Kits containing basic hygiene items.
