Vancouver crime: Woman hit with hammer in ‘random attack’

A 33-year-old woman was hit on the head with a hammer during a “random attack” in downtown Vancouver over the weekend, according to police.

Officials said the victim was walking with friends near Seymour and Pender streets on Sunday evening when another woman attacked her from behind.

“The suspect did not know the victim and had no previous contact with the group,” said Konst. Jason Doucett said in a news release.

“This random attack could have been much worse if the victims had not been helped by sheltering and calling 911.”

Responding officers arrested a 27-year-old suspect in the area and recovered a weapon described by police as a “small hammer”. Saundria Janet Lynxleigh has since been charged with assault with a weapon.

Officials said the victim, a resident of Coquitlam, was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
