Virar-Alibaug Corridor

Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has decided to start the Virar-Alibaug Multipurpose Highway project in 2024 to solve the traffic problem in MMR. It is noteworthy that the 127 km Multi-Modal Corridor from Alibaug to Virar was planned only a decade ago. Earlier this project was to be done by MMRDA, but now it has been handed over to MSRDC.

The land acquisition work for this corridor has been expedited. It was informed that MSRDC is planning to complete the land acquisition by May. The process of getting the necessary funds for land acquisition in the form of loan from HUDCO has also been expedited. After May, the tender process for the work of this route will be started.

1,300 hectares of land required

After this project came to MSRDC, the process of land acquisition was started by making a detailed plan. Over 1,300 hectares of land is to be acquired for the 128-km-long, 16-lane project. For the Multi Modal Corridor, land will be acquired in three districts of Raigarh, Thane and Palghar, out of which 61.29 hectares in Palghar, 520.92 hectares in Thane, while about 765.01 hectares in Raigarh will be acquired.

The cost of land acquisition reached 22 thousand crores.

It is worth mentioning that the cost of land acquisition of this multi-purpose project has reached 22 thousand crores, which is four times more than the total cost of the project. It was told that Rs 2,215 crore was to be paid for land acquisition in 2012, while the total project cost at that time was Rs 12,554 crore, which has now increased to Rs 55,564 crore. According to MSRDC, the land acquisition cost of the project alone has reached Rs 22,000 crore. MSRDC faced a big challenge in raising this fund. A senior MSRDC official told that the funds have been raised.

Construction will be done in two phases

The proposed multi-modal corridor will be constructed in two phases, with a 98 km stretch connecting Nowghar to Balawali under Alignment-1 and a 29 km stretch connecting Balawali with Alibaug under Alignment-2. With the opening of this highway, the distance between Virar-Alibaug will be reduced, as well as the economic development of the area will also happen. This project is considered very important from the point of view of Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
