Will MS Dhoni be Banned from IPL 2023 Final for Arguing with Umpire in CSK vs GT Match; Dhoni to be banned for IPL final? The boat is being raised on Mahi because of ‘that’ controversy
We all have experienced that Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s mind runs faster than a computer. In Tuesday’s match against Gujarat Titans, Mahi also secured the team’s ticket to the finals. However, now a controversy during that match has become a topic of discussion. In the 12th over of Gujarat’s innings, Pathirana went off the field for some time. When he returned, Mahi asked him to bowl the 16th over. This led to an argument between Dhoni and the umpire and the match was stopped. But after that debate, Pathirana bowled the 16th over.
What does the rule say?
As far as IPL rules are concerned, if a player is out of the field for treatment due to an internal injury or other reasons, he has to spend the same amount of time on the field after returning to the field. Only then can he bowl. Knowing this rule, Mahi cleverly stopped the match in the middle of the field and Pathirana bowled the 16th over after so much time in the discussion.
According to reports, Dhoni was preparing the field when he saw him talking to umpire Mathisha Pathirana. After this, Dhoni went to the umpire Chris Gaffery who was standing at square leg and understood what the umpire was talking to him. In such a situation when Dhoni realized that Pathirana could not bowl immediately according to the rules. So he spoke to the umpire, he had no other option to bowl but Pathirana. During this interaction the match was halted for 4-5 minutes and after that Pathirana’s time on the field was over and he was allowed to bowl and Dhoni’s move was successful.
Question mark on Dhoni
The question still remains whether the umpires considered penalizing CSK under Unfair Play Rule 41.9 for wasting time while fielding. As a rule, the umpire has to caution the fielding team for doing so and if they feel that time is being deliberately wasted between overs, the team is fined 5 runs for doing so again and the bowler can also be suspended. However, whether this rule is broken or not is in the hands of the umpire.
Tweet by Brad Hogg
Brad Hogg tweeted on the matter that Dhoni took advantage of his presence and confused the umpires for 4 minutes with his words. So that he can get the 16th over from Pathirana. Panchani position should have been kept in hand. But he was smiling, which was not appropriate at all. It has since been said that MS deliberately wasted time and could be fined or banned for the final with more severe action.
